Hello World!
The Able Few started in a basement in South St. Louis by two very young and naive entrepreneurs back in 2001. Those two guys are still at it and have learned a thing or two about what makes great websites. A little less naive but don't dare say grown up.
Early on, we knew that we didn't just want to make brochure sites. We scraped our way through the various technologies available at the time to build sites that made lasting impressions. But we didn't want to just make sites with flashy images. We wanted to give our clients tools that helped them speak to their customers.
Home grown solutions can be hell.
As we discovered, along with most in the community at that time, there where two options for anyone needing a dynamic site.
- Create a home grown content management system
- Use extremely over priced licensed software
We forged ahead building small applications that met the needs of clients. As the market expanded and matured, new tools were introduced but all along something was missing. Eventually, off the shelf open source software evolved to become a mainstay in the minds of potential clients. We delved into playing the implementation game trying to capitalize on the power of these off the shelf solutions. There was a light at the end of the tunnel. But it was a really long tunnel.
And then...
One glorious (and cold) December day in 2005, an announcement came that changed the face of development forever. Ruby on Rails 1.0 was released. We had been watching RoR coming out of guys at 37 signals skeptically and decided to take the plunge.
It's been almost 5 years since that day, and we have to say, we are still pretty much in love. We now consider ourselves Rails developers. We still use and produce in other technologies, but even when we do, we know that it could be better in Rails.
